O'neal leads Raptors charge

Jermaine O’Neal’s knees were encased in ice, as was his left shoulder, and a big elastic bandage was wrapped around his upper left thigh.

It was 30 minutes after the Toronto Raptors had inflicted a 107-96 beating on the Miami Heat Sunday at the Air Canada Centre, and the big centre was feeling the repercussions of a tough, physical encounter.

O’Neal is still not scoring as he’d like — just 11 points in almost 34 minutes of work. But it was his defensive prowess, his gritty work underneath the basket at both ends of the court that set the tone for this Toronto victory, which was accomplished without the participation of point guard Jose Calderon, who sat this one…

Q: Do you think that Detroit got better in the trade by adding Iverson and losing Chauncy?

JO: I don’t really pay much attention to that. There are a lot of teams that say they are good on paper but until they actually play together and see what kind of chemistry they have you never really know. I know A.I. personally and I know him as an opposing player, and what he brings to the table is hard work, his intensity, and his level of play, but again Detroit has thrived by being an even-keel team where nobody really looks at each other as being the top player or the superstar. O’Neal brings Raptors newfound swagger

Jermaine O’Neal has it. It practically oozes out of him, from his red headband to his broad shoulders right on down to his giant feet. O’Neal has swagger.

He is a six-time NBA all-star with an all-world ego. He is a bear of a man.

And he talks a big game on the basketball court, and backs it up with big-time blocks and rim-rattling dunks and a demeanour that almost seems to defy his opponents to test him.

O’Neal believes in O’Neal. And he believes that the 2008-09 Toronto Raptors, with their perfect 3-0 record – and 79 more regular season games left to play – are getting in touch with their inner swagger. O’Neal says he could see it starting to seep…
